Patino Diet involves eating low glycemic index foods

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) - For many, bread is the staple that starts your day at breakfast and surrounding some deli meat, it's lunch. However, doctor turned author Frank Patino says it's time to start paying attention to what happens to our bodies when we load up on foods like breads, rice, potatoes and sweets. They're high on the glycemic index. That means they cause our blood sugar to shoot up, triggering an insulin release. Insulin tells our bodies to store fat.

In his book "The Age of Globesity," Patino says you've got to eat foods that are 55 or lower on the glycemic index.

"If you look at the numbers and you stay below 55, you can keep your blood sugar levels low, which keeps your insulin levels low, which, in fact, allows you to burn body fat. You stay lean, and it prevents your insulin receptors from down regulating and becoming resistant, which is what causes type 2 diabetes," the doctor says.

Here is an idea of how the glycemic index shapes up, according to the Patino Diet. Broccoli is a 30. A banana is 55. French bread is 95, and beer is 110.

The Patino Diet calls for eating healthy fats, lean proteins and low GI foods.

"Most fruits and vegetables are very low on the glycemic index. Your green vegetables are basically very, very low. Most of your fruits are. Even cherries that are very sweet are only 22 on the index. If you stay below 55 on the glycemic index, you're going to do well," Patino says.

"Food" for thought

In 1982, only 4% of our children were overweight. By 2004 the number had more than quadrupled to a whopping 17.1%, and it is still rising. This problem is not exclusive to our children. Statistics show that over 25% of adults in the Unites States now live completely sedentary lifestyles and the majority of those who are not completely sedentary are borderline sedentary. This has created a growing problem (in more ways than one) that is catastrophic in scope. Two thirds of our adult population is now categorized as either clinically obese or overweight; not half…. two thirds!

Our lack of regular physical exercise is one of the key elements bringing us into alignment with that iceberg in the horizon, but it is not the only one. Here is the clincher: our sedentary lives are further complicated by the absolutely dismal choices we make in our diets. The fast-paced lifestyle of our culture has brought upon us the convenience of “fast foods.” They are fast foods all right—foods that will quickly bring us to the grave.

Consider the typical meal of a ten-year-old child in a fast food chain restaurant. If he eats one double-cheeseburger with French fries and a 16-oz. soda pop he will ingest a total of approximately 860 calories, which is about 43% of his recommended daily caloric intake. This is if he does not get a refill, or an extra cheeseburger, or an ice cream sundae for desert. Not to mention that the high content of saturated fats will begin to line the arteries of this ten-year-old child with plaque that may one day kill him or her.
